Course content example

This two-day course was delivered to the University of Oxford, Department of Physics in July 2008. the emphasis was to provide a grounding in the physics of high vacuum and current technology to enable graduate engineers, with little or no prior experience of high vacuum, to design and work with high and ultra-high vacuum systems.

Day 1, am: Concepts and Theory

• welcome and introductions
• units, symbols and nomenclature
• vacuum and pressure regimes
• conductance and flow calculations
• basic vacuum calculations (workshop)

Day 1, pm: Vacuum Hardware - Pumps

• types and selection of vacuum pumps
• primary pumps
• secondary and tertiary pumps
• using pumping speed and compression ratio curves
• pumping system configuration (including workshop)

Day 2, am: Vacuum Hardware

• vacuum measurement and instrumentation
• valves, seals and flanges
• feedthroughs - accessing the vacuum

Day 2, pm: Achieving High Vacuum

• the need for high vacuum
• water and surface degassing
• leaks, trapped volumes and outgassing
• materials for high vacuum
• use of materials and joining techniques for high and ultra-high vacuum

Towards UHV

• contamination and cleanliness
• driving out the water and materials for UHV
